Mammut has established a strong reputation as one of the leading alpine brands in the world. From ropes, slings, helmets and hardware; to mountaineering boots, technical clothing, packs and sleeping bags, Mammut makes high-performance climbing and outdoor equipment for the toughest adventures. Even as an expansive, leading brand, Mammut’s origins can be traced back to a small, specialist ropemaker in Switzerland. In 1862, Kaspar Tanner began making his own ropes, after finishing a 3-year apprenticeship and spending a few years in Germany honing his craft. He soon moved to Lenzburg, built a covered ropewalk for all-weather production and in the 1890s, brought his son Oscar into the business. This family run company, with a passion and commitment to building quality ropes, was the basis for the Mammut brand.
