Mammut has established a strong reputation as one of the leading alpine brands in the world. From ropes, slings, helmets and hardware; to mountaineering boots, technical clothing, packs and sleeping bags, Mammut makes high-performance climbing and outdoor equipment for the toughest adventures. Even as an expansive, leading brand, Mammut’s origins can be traced back to a small, specialist ropemaker in Switzerland. In 1862, Kaspar Tanner began making his own ropes, after finishing a 3-year apprenticeship and spending a few years in Germany honing his craft. He soon moved to Lenzburg, built a covered ropewalk for all-weather production and in the 1890s, brought his son Oscar into the business. This family run company, with a passion and commitment to building quality ropes, was the basis for the Mammut brand.
Mammut focuses on sustainable design and production, using low impact and recycled materials in manufacturing their climbing ropes and products – ensuring their ropes are climate neutral. They offset their emissions by funding the construction of greenhouses and small hydroelectric generators in Ladakh – a region in the Himalayas. This project helps the region grow crops all winter, reducing the transport requirements of food during the harsh winter season.
Mammut has the valiant goal of being Net Zero by 2050. The company holds itself to a high standard and is working towards having all their clothes be PFC free while working alongside Bluesign to ensure fewer harmful chemicals are byproducts of production. Mammut was the first outdoor brand to join Fair Wear Foundation and is a Fur Free Retail that complies to RDS and RWS in many of their products. Two sustainability projects that Mammut has headed up are the We Care Rope- a rope that uses the extra strands from finished ropes to cut down on waste- and the Close the Loop shirts- that use materials recycled from used climbing ropes.
Coast Mountain Collective works closely with Mammut to provide some of the most state-of-the-art, sustainable equipment in the sphere of climbing and outdoor adventures. We believe in enjoying the outdoors in alignment with nature; respecting and protecting our outdoor playground.
