Monte’s a ACMG / IFMGA Mountain Guide that works full-time skiing, mountaineering & climbing from his home base in Squamish, BC. He grew up just outside of Fernie BC. His grandfather was one of the original crew that started what has become Fernie Alpine Resort and his mom worked there in the winters teaching skiing. As a result he opted to snowboard and spent the next 20 or so years on a single plank. Later, when he got into touring and winter mountaineering, he found that snowboarding tech was eons behind skis so he took the plunge and swapped over to the light. He’s never looked back since. Some people say that there’s nothing like surfing fresh pow on a board but He’d take a pair of fat pow skis any day. After graduating university with an engineering degree he found he wasn’t satisfied only chasing his passion for the mountains on weekends or in the evenings. This led him away from working behind a desk into a life of guiding, avalanche forecasting and movie/film safety work. Monte has since climbed and skied all over the world and has a passion for travel, always researching that next adventure. Past trips have included Patagonia, Kenya, Oman, Chile, Argentina, Costa Rica, Australia, New Zealand, Spain and Japan. Of course he’s also visited numerous areas closer to home like Bella Coola, Bugaboos, Rockies, Rogers Pass, Alaska, Yukon, Indian Creek, Red Rocks, Zion, Joshua Tree, Index, Yosemite, etc. He’s currently planning some ski trips to India and Russia and a climbing trip to China. In addition to Guiding, Monte’s an avid gear junkie and lover of the outdoors.
